UK High Court rules ISPs are to block access to three more file sharing sites

Six UK Internet Service Providers including the nation’s largest (BT, BSkyB and Virgin Media) were ordered by the High Court today to block access to three websites primarily dedicated to file sharing. The sites in question are Kickass Torrents, H33t and Fenopy. This is not the first ban imposed by a UK court since access to The Pirate Bay and Newzbin2 has already been restricted by these ISPs.

The Internet providers have 15 working days to enact this block, which was sought by music industry body BPI backed by a number of labels including majors Universal and Sony. While the BPI’s chief executive Geoff Taylor welcomed the ruling, there are many open questions when it comes to blocking access to individual websites.

On one side there are easy workarounds to the blocks and anyone can find them online, on the other there are countless alternatives for file sharing available on the net. This means that there is no real end in sight, as users migrate to new destinations while the industry is forced to play catch-up in a game that is resource-heavy but that may not deliver a great deal of results.
