Cooking Vinyl cuts deals with UB40’s Ali Campbell, Seth Lakeman
UK indie label Cooking Vinyl Records, part of the CV Group of independent music companies, is offering worldwide label services to two popular British veteran acts for their next studio albums.
The first deal is with Ali Campbell, former lead singer of UB40, the British reggae-pop band that stormed up the international charts from the 1970s to the 1990s.
Cooking Vinyl will handle the international physical and digital distribution services, plus the marketing and other ancillary needs for Campbell’s fifth solo album, which will be self-produced. The album’s details, including the release date, are expected to be disclosed soon.
While with UB40, Campbell received Britain’s prestigious Ivor Novello Award, in recognition of excellence in songwriting and composition. He left the band in 2008 after 30 years.
His first four solo albums hit the Top 20 in the UK charts, and he continues to tour extensively. After selling more than 60 million records combined as a solo act and as part of UB40, Campbell still commands affection and respect in the industry.
Cooking Vinyl is providing similar label services to popular folk singer Seth Lakeman, who is preparing his seventh solo album. It will be produced by Ian Grimble, who co-founded UK-based international artist-development organization Communion. The album is scheduled for an early 2014 release.
“Seth and I are very excited to be with a company that seems to be going from strength to strength whilst retaining its independent roots,” said Dave Farrow, Lakeman’s manager at DMF Music. “The deal is forward-thinking and I expect to see a lot more of these types of deals in the future where everyone in the chain can make money.”
Lakeman is also a headliner at this year’s Glastonbury Festival, Europe’s largest outdoor music festival, in June.
