As I Used to Know Her

if you have words to speak of her
don't use the time to talk of shame
the lies you sell are not of her
but of another with her name

she wandered through my changing years
on all she touched she left her trace
and all the wonders of the day
where bowed in shame before her grace

I knew her in her Winter coat
wrapped against the biting cold
I knew her naked in the sun
she reached into my very soul

I still can taste her sweet perfume
imagination still it plays
her face lit with that crocked smile
a whisper of my young days

so do not taint me with your tongue
what's truth to you is not for me
just turn your face and walk away
and leave me with my memories

and if you speak if her at all
don't use the words that twist and stain
for I would know her only
as I used to know her then
