Dragons' Eyes

A long, long time ago
From legends dead
There comes a tale
From which it's said

There is a place
It's hard to see
East of here, and West of there
Where all the eye can see
Is made of gold

And so it goes –
The story rolls –
Twisted 'round by man
In ambitions cold.

To find the way
Of which no man knew
Except through dragons' eyes
So, off they flew

To hunt them down
For dragons' eyes
Could show the path
To that magic land
Where all one wished for could come true

And many a ship
Washed up on the sand
But never they found
That magic land
Of gold and wishes at command
For dead dragons' eyes can not show
And in rage and greed, man's folly grew.

So the last dragons fell
In blood and fire
Except for two
A young male and his heart's desire
That wished to run no more

So into a cave they flew
To nurse their wounds
As their hunger grew.
Too many to fight,
Too weak to fly
Perhaps the dragons gods
Shone bright that night
On courage, and love, one final stand
So the dragon race would not end
And so they cast their lot
Upon the wind
Into fate's hands they did swim

But dragons still roam
As do hate and greed
So let this tale make you brave
So magic things do not end.
