Margaret

Six years old in the backyard
When we were introduced
It's really nice to meet you Margaret

We kissed by accident
And then we smiled
And our mother's they started laughing
Because there was nothing wrong with that

And then I met the boys and I'd stay out too late
To hang out by my window and sing you songs across the way
And it's been so long since I've seen a pretty face
Lord knows I should have stayed
I should have stayed out of trouble

I should have called Margaret
My Margaret got away
I should have called Margaret
My Margaret got away

Well she went after Harvard and some medical school, you know
And I stayed in New York
I had to take my time with that

And we wrote each other letters sharing poetry
Like Mary Oliver's "March"
Oh, I thought I made her mine with that

Then I met the man who promised my name seen from outer space
All the letters went home while I was singing across the states
And it's been so long since I've seen a pretty face
Lord knows I should have stayed
I should have stayed out of trouble

I should have called Margaret
My Margaret got away
I should have called Margaret
My Margaret got away

Well I'm up too late singing songs to you babe
On a piano out of tune
I blame myself for that

And I know you're somewhere listening darling
I know it
Well I could only hope for that

I should have called
I should have called you babe
I should have called Margaret
I should have called Margaret
