Nashville When I Rise
New York has a sound all of its own
Sirens wailing, people scream alone
Taxi horns blaring
Traffic barely moving along
Clouds hang over subterrainian blues
Reflected in the highrise avenues
This city every day
Never fails to take your breath away
If I close my eyes I swear
I can hear a pedal steel guitar
And a handsome couple dance
A two-step on a sawdust floor
As I watch them glide counter-clockwse
And the New York evening rush hour reminds me
I won't be in Nashville when I rise
The F train is running late again
People crushing on looks like rain
Driver said he don't know
How long we'll be delayed
As we rattle through the dark and dusty haze
The F train screeches as it sways
Bodies pushed around
Weaving through the fast food trash bouqueys
If I close my eyes I swear
I can hear a pedal steel guitar
And a handsome couple dance
A two-step on a sawdust floor
I watch them glide counter-clockwse
And the New York evening rush hour reminds me
I won't be in Nashville when I rise
The city night paints color over gray
And office girls and boys are on display
My head is somewhere west of here
Wishing I was someplace else today
If I close my eyes I swear
I can hear a pedal steel guitar
And a handsome couple dance
A two-step on a sawdust floor
I watch them glide counter-clockwse
And the New York evening rush hour reminds me
I won't be in Nashville when I rise
Sirens wailing, people scream alone
