Alligator

Way down upon the Suwannee lies the Cove Restaurant
Where the waitresses smoke Salems and the steak is chicken fried
And if you step out by the river, you might meet one of the locals
A giant alligator with a healthy appetite

He's seventeen feet long with a hide as black as midnight
Knobbled and pebbled like a wet gravel drive
His eyes shine in dark like locomotive headlights
He can gobble up a cave diver in two or three bites

So don't you go a'chasing that old alligator
That lives in the brown water beneath the Suwannee Cove
He'll grab you by the ankle and pull you down under
It'll happen real fast and he will eat you real slow

William Robert Fletcher was the county's greatest hunter
He bought a bigger boat each year to hold them gators he shot
He said I'm gonna catch that reptile and make him into footwear
Well his hat was found a-floatin but Billy Bob was not

So don't you go a'chasing that old alligator
That lives in the brown water beneath the Suwannee Cove
He'll grab you by the ankle and pull you down under
It'll happen real fast and he will eat you real slow

There was a matron from Nantucket who scoffed at the warnings
As she sipped banana daquiris and sent back her cup
She said "I'm gonna take his picture for my internet boyfriend"
But the last her waitress saw of her was bubbles coming up

So don't you go a'chasing that old alligator
That lives in the brown water beneath the Suwannee Cove
He'll grab you by the ankle and pull you down under
It'll happen real fast and he will eat you real slow
