Space Cadet

When I was just a kid
I was besotted with
Apollo's silhouette and the
Race to conquer outer space
My walls were covered with
Pictures of rocket ships
And I was pretty sure that
I would be an astronaut
I didn't know it but
My dreams would soon be crushed
It didn't take much just a
Trip to get my vision checked
It turns out my eyes are screwed
And there's some things I can't do
Like flying aeroplanes
And boldly going into space

He laughed while he relayed this
Interesting diagnosis
How could he know that he'd just
Reduced my dreams to sawdust?

Assimilate the facts
Move on and don't look back
I turned the other cheek
Becoming a computer geek
And I would spend my time
Programming line by line
Creating other worlds in
Digital computer code

A place where there's no one to
Tell you what you cannot do
A place where rules are bent and
Perfect vision is irrelevant

A string of data bits
In byte sized packages
Defining what I see in
Virtual reality
Uploaded to a place
Somewhere in cyber space
Around the world they fly
Launched at the speed of light
They take me with them to
New planets new horizons
Exploring virgin worlds
Traversing through the worm hole
And with my hyperdrive
I cross the stars and time
Lost on forbidden planet
I'm just a space cadet

Out here in low Earth orbit
I look down on the planet
I see infinity
I find a better me
