Broken Glass

So strong we seem, from the outside
As we hold in our heart of hearts
Until a precious hope; a dream
Is shattered into thousands of parts
And gets scattered all over the floor
Or hides outside in the grass
Waiting to do damage
Stepping on broken glass

So sure we need absolution
We lose sight of what we should be thinking of
And, so very far we distance ourselves
From the one we vowed an eternity to love
As we keep moving in different directions
Our relationship goes nowhere fast
Trying to ignore the pain, while
Stepping on broken glass

On one side, to forgive is just so, passion driven
As the pain and suffering held inside still burns bright
On the other side there's a desperate need to be forgiven
For the wrong that cries out to be finally turned right

No clever mind, no outward action
Can craft the change needed to impart
Until a kind of humble love and mercy
Is offered with a sincere change of heart
Or in a rut we must guardedly walk
Always studying the ground as we pass
Careful not to cut ourselves too badly
Stepping on broken glass

Careful not to do too much damage
Stepping on broken glass
