Letter to You

I walked these old haunted streets
Visiting the ghosts of my childhood
Where the bikes lay on the front lawns
As the bursts of water balloons and laughter
Echo. It's a strange sight to see
You wonder if we knew that these were our
Last days together
We run from house-to-house, yard-to-yard
As we mix every extremely sugary powder we can grab
Just add water, bottom's up
Later
Me and the boys grab a ball and we play skins-and-skins - no
Shirts, because the girls are watching
We try our luck at dunking after we lower the hoop of course
We're not trying to show off or anything
But then you came up with the idea - we should
Hit the pool
The boys grin, waiting to see what kind of bikinis the girls have. We
Snicker as we splash each other, cannonballs as close to our victims as
We can

I think about those days often. Well, I think
About a lot of things, I have time. I reflect on what
Friendship meant then, what life was and what it is now
I spin these reels in my sleep then refuse to leave the theater
For days and days, popping out only for a snack or a toilet break
Here and there
Time makes fools of us all
I'm sorry for being a bit uhh melancholic here
I just stumbled down the rabbit hole thinkin' of when
We last wrote each other. It seems to me that maybe
It's just natural to get this way sometimes? It's possible
We're at that age where most of our conversations start
With "Say, you 'member when?"
We'll laugh again but less each time we tell our spouses
Or whatever strangers are within earshot
At least, that's what you and I will always share. As I finish my
Time here, knowing that I can't make up for my absence and though
We will reunite, I fear how different it'll be. At this point it's
Harder to remain as you, well, as everyone remembers me. There
Are days I've felt too stoic for life. But, I bet I can bring
That carefree child back soon. I have a few errands to run when I finish my
Time. I suspect I'll be getting out by the... time you get
This letter

In closing: I send you my best, I'll find answers before long

Adieu
