The Age of Reason

Science is more than a body of knowledge. It's a way of thinking
A way of skeptically interrogating the Universe with a fine understanding
Of human fallibility. If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to
Interrogate those who tell us something is true, to be skeptical of those
In authority, then we're up for grabs to the next charlatan, political or
Religious, who comes ambling along." - Carl Sagan

I remember the caustic, Sunday school lessons hammered into me
Outrageous and fanciful explanations fraught with impossibilities
Faith is the tepid end of investigation
A cold stagnation
If we never question we will never grow

It's the Age of Reason
And now we know we have nothing to fear
From fairy tales and superstition

I've always found magical explanations difficult to believe
Holy extrapolations break down with honest and sensible scrutiny
Claims of magic are but science that we have yet to comprehend
We will always learn and enlightenment will never end

Intellectual treason – promoting lies to beguile the gullible masses
Maintain an ignorant status quo
It is a beautiful fiction, but not consistent with reality
If you take it on faith, there is nowhere left to grow

Dreaming poets flounder
Religious zealots cease to learn
As scientists dispel the miracles
Consign fables to the urn

"There are no sacred truths. All assumptions must be critically
Examined. Arguments from authority are worthless. Whatever is
Inconsistent with the facts, no matter how fond of it we are
Must be discarded or revised." - Carl Sagan

It's the age of reason, we can dispense with religion and lore
For the Truth we can no longer ignore

The Age of Reason
We are striving to understand the world

Faith is anathema to curiosity
The Age of Reason

Science is not perfect; It's only a tool.
But it's the best tool we have. - Carl Sagan
