Summer Skin

When I was a little boy living on my own
I went to see my cousins in their old-fashioned home
The older one, he said to me, have you got thick skin on your feet
'Cause when you do, you'll be able to walk across the rocks like me

And another time when I was nine or maybe eight or ten
I went to see my Uncle J, a farmer among men
He said to me, and he let me see the thick skin on his hands
From diggin' down deep in the ground for the taters rocks and hens

I know one day I'll get 'em while the summer sun just glows
Like my cousins and my uncle J I am one who grows
Dark and thick and hard as rock runnin' barefoot and pushin' rope
I haven't got 'em yet but summer's long and before the fall begins
I'll have my hands, my feet and toes, I'll have my summer skin

Way back then it seemed to me that summer stuck around
For many a day, and months and years, the sun would not go down
Nowadays, you know I wish it could still be just like then
'Cause by the end of those long hot days, I had my summer skin
