Hip Hop

whatever happened to my city
used to be live,
but now its looking kind of iffy
things aint been the same since we lost biggie
replaced with all these fakes
somebody slipped us a mickey
remember in the early stages
they didnt think hip hop would last
but if you asked me that fraze
is just a thing of the past
its amazing what lengths
some took.to be accepted
when a bunch of artist
went on to sell over a million records
even though thats the point
and all of that might sound impressive
but how many stepped
in front of 1520 sedgewick
dont care what u got
or how ppl you shot
so tell me what the fck
that gotta do with hip hop
í do this for the real hip hip
i represent the real hip hop
before lift every voice and sing
it was negro spiriuals
blues and folkore was at its pinnacle
jazz birthed doo wop
rock ñ roll r&b and soul hip hop and you dont stop
it started out in the park
we used to do out in the dark
what spreaded like wildfire
that turned bi coastal
and all points in between
now its gone global
willing to bet
most artist came out feeling hopeful
until they find out
these radio stations
dont deal with the locals
since when does an artist
worth based on if they sold a record
do u just listen to beat
or do u listen for the message
í do this for the real hip hip
i represent the real hip hop
alot of shit has changes
in a new york minute
as long as there money in this game
then we all in it
what your point in telling me your real
if you authentic
í feel you'll say anything
just to boost your image
once the labels got involved
it sucked it dry like an embezzlement
took away from the culture and separated all the elements
sex sells and causing controversy
is evidence
how the people of today
views an artist's relevance
often imitated and never be duplicated
now everybody's sound the same including these djays
and their playlists
what ever happened to lyrics
or originality
hip hop aint dead it just
their careers were casualties

í do this for the real hip hip
i represent the real hip hop
