my generation (b-side)

I call my generation
the in-between.
Coming after the old way,
not quite in the new order.

And by the time
we learned a way of life
everything had changed,
already miss the old days.

I named my generation
the age of choice.
So much free time.
So many ways to waste it.

And we're so bored,
we spend all our time
fretting over the best way
to spend our time.

Do you feel paralyzed?
Like I do.
Having a hard time
learning these new rules.

Don't get me wrong,
I see the way that people live their lives.
I tried to play along
but it left me unsatisfied.

I see my generation
desperate to connect
but our default mode is isolation.

It's so easy to pick up that phone
but it doesn't build trust
and we're all
still alone.

I named my generation
stretched too thin.
Optimized and pulled in all directions.
Who will advocate for freedom
when the margins are so slim.
The happy don't spend.

Do you feel paralyzed?
Like I do.
Having a hard time
learning these new rules.

Don't get me wrong,
I see the way that people live their lives.
I tried to play along
but it left me unsatisfied.
I get that you're worried.
I get that you're bored
but don't ever settle
for somebody else's world.

This is your life,
not a script line.

I'm here to tell you that
we've all been misled,
programmed to spend.
And remind you that
all the best things in life are free.
The best things are hard.

Wake up my generation.

If you feel paralyzed
like I do.
Having a hard time
learning these new rules.

Don't get me wrong,
I see the way that people live their lives.
I tried to play along
but it left me unsatisfied.

Guess I'll make my own way.
