Armadillos

Armadillos are the only mammals
That have a shell, it covers their tails
Head, back and legs, they're made of bony plates
That overlap like armour keeping them safe

In mornings and evenings they'll
Hunt for vegetation
Invertebrates and sometimes carrion

They get food out of small gaps
With their long sticky tongue
Their name's spanish for little armoured one

Three banded armadillos
Are the only ones that roll
Up for protection while the rest dig a hole

To cover their bellies
They prefer loam or sandy
Loose soils as this makes burrowing easy

There are twenty varieties
All but one live in latin america
With a low metabolic rate
Their immune system's poor and they can't withstand cold temperatures

Armadillos are very good swimmers
Sometimes they'll walk across the bottom of rivers
They can hold their breath for six minutes roughly
Swallowing air for extra buoyancy

They're solitary
Their eyesight's poorly
They can jump up four feet
Their heads patterns are unique
