On the Hill

I'm alone amongst my friends on the top of this old hill
The silence says it all to me
Visible breath and stone cold hands, their dreams never fullfill
Unaware that this is meant to be

Worn out I'm leaning on the pole while the flag is barely moving
And my friends are all asleep
There seems to be no living soul aware that time's proceeding
Undisturbed, relentlessly

The mist sticks needles in my face and hides the world below my feet
So out of reach for me

Will you remember me, how I was staring in the black, how I was staring in the black
Not like the legend soon to be but just afraid, yeah, just afraid
And never coming back, no, never coming back

Here they come. Here they come. Lord, save me

The silence has returned on the top of this old hill
What is left is only memory

Pain and fear matter no more, just some birds continue singing
And my friends forever sleep
Peace is there when least expected and overrules all sorrow
Unannounced and unexplained

How I wish that I could tell that I'm still here on this old hill
So you could talk to me

Will you remember me, how I was staring in the black, how I was staring in the black
Not like the legend soon to be but just afraid, yeah, just afraid
And never coming back, no, never coming back
