Shooting in the Dark

Some measure life with dollar bills, some measure life with books of knowledge
I once found a bottle with a bunch of pills that made me think the universal answer was college
Well I was so far off the mark
The difference couldn't be more stark
And now I'm shooting in the dark
With a broken gun

I was never good at certain things like staying calm as I approached the fire
My luck ran out and like a bird that sings I tried to fly just a little higher
Well I thought that I was so cool
For breaking that one sacred rule
Well didn't I look like a fool
For flying into the sun

Yet again I'm cleaning up my own mess
Sometimes it's cruel, sometimes it's funny
How can I tell if I've found success
If I'm stuck inside on days so sunny?
I feel my youth slipping away
The truth hurts but it's here to stay
And even when I go to play
The game's lost all its fun

No lesson's gonna save me now
So I'll put my faith in what they never taught me
By taking a pause to remember how
I felt before the world had bought me
The smell of flowers filled the air
I felt the breeze blow through my hair
I even lost the will the care
About all that I'd done

Yah, yah, yah, yah, yah

Well I was so far off the mark
The difference couldn't be more stark
And now I'm shooting in the dark
With a broken gun
