And So They Carried On

And then they came for me
Under the all seeing eye
Physical remedy
To thoughts I dared supply
Jettisoned care and avoided my stare
Dragged limp through the halls to the hole
Tasted blood from the fists that rained down like a kiss
On the doubt bouncing off my skull

No one intervened they just turned their head
Studiously averted their gaze
Unfortunate inconvenience
When someone doesn't know their place
Better out of sight
Better out of mind

Last thing I heard before they ripped the headphones off
Keeps bouncing through my head
I'm trying to grapple with the sounds and words
To make sense of what was said
They all knew what was happening
Told a thousand times
They all went with what was easy
Earnt through countless crimes
And so they carried on

My eye swells shut although I've never seen so true
The present invents the past
We all need oxygen to breathe
The crack in the mask
There could have been a balance
A chance to not corrupt
But just the chosen few were saved
Everything else given up
And this I can't unknow
