Autumn Kettle

Pelt of fall colors, quilted up for me
Briar-cut overalls, patch em at my knee
Sweater stitched of golden brown tamarack trees
I plucked the strings like I do huckleberries

Rock-stove kettle
Stinging nettle
Made up in my tea
It put me right to sleep

Smell of pine fire And a book to read
Critters gather up a pile of seed
I'd kill a pumpkin for Halloween
Then save the filling for Thanksgiving

Autumn kettle
Singing metal
Could make an old train weep
And make a cider steep

Autumn kettle
Singing metal
Could build train from steam
Over leaves a rake would sweep

Autumn kettle
Singing metal
