In Maricopa County, where the wind blows wild and free

This land is full of secrets, this land has seen it all
The Apache and the antelope, Walmarts and strip malls
Folks all say this used to be a good town, weren't they all

Hank lived in Maricopa County all his life
Owned the hardware store on main street, but since he lost his wife
He close up at odd hours, I'd seen him driving around all night
Then two girls from my high school disappeared one May
Took a shortcut home one night and fell off the Earth along the way
And I can still see those two empty chairs on graduation day

Now everyone wants someone else to blame in Maricopa County

Some kids on bikes found Hank in an arroyo south of town
His mouth all filled with dust and dirt, his hands and both feet bound
The sheriff told my daddy it was suicide, but I still don't see how
Me I've got the lunch crowd on weekends at El Rey
But things don't feel the same since the Ford plant moved away
Mostly I just sit here wishing I could forget about this place
