The Old Man and Me

I stuck her a little note behind page 43
Inside my favorite book, the Old Man and the Sea
It's not required reading in any classroom you say
But how a struggle with a fish means way more today

Will she ever find it? I know I'll be gone
Just words on paper... Who's right? Who's wrong?

It comes after dark when all has gone home
Only on a Sunday... can you feel so alone
The house is not empty. It's still you and me
But we always go back to drifting at sea

Will she ever find it? I know I'll be gone
Just words on paper... Who's right? Who's wrong?

You can't stop what's coming
Still we try and try
Ignoring the truth
And living a lie

By morning, the task of staying ahead
Gives way until nighttime takes us to bed
It happens all over... the book back on the shelf
We lose track of our time and mostly ourselves

Will she ever find it? I know I'll be gone
Just words on paper... turned into a song
So tell me Ernest... 'cause I have to see
How much like the old man do I have to be?

The old man and me

Now, it's my little secret every time I pass by
The book on the shelf whose lessons apply
Wedged between pages about the old man and me
Time to cut the fish loose and quit drifting to sea
