Vermilion

I stood atop the mountain
Watch the vermilion color
Of the clouds
Fade into the sky

As she stood beside me
With the last of the tobacco
She said you're "fixing's too dry"

It looked like rain
It looked a storm
If we're lucky lightning might strike
Then we'd never need to leave this place
It would always just be tonight

Too late for coffee
So we switched over to whiskey
In a way
It would keep us warm

In the hazy fog of stars
I was looking for Mars
But you said
I was a cow

Or maybe a bull
Or maybe a goat
But I remember that you were a fish
Cause from the shimmering stream
A sockeye jumped high
And her color was that of a dream

The golden hawk
Takes his flight
With the rise
Of the morning light

Shining in his talons
Is our scaly friend
Now it's come
To an end

Tear down the camp
Pack up the stove
Smother any embers that you see

You'll go your way
And I'll go mine
A thousand miles in between
