For the First Time

The old familiar eyes might not be full of love
But at least they've lost the hate
And the practiced smile that always held a bitten tongue
Might've finally given way
The hair that's thinned from countless hours
Of tearing won't return, and that's ok
Because he can feel the light for the first time
In the longest time today

It doesn't mean the dark is gone forever
Or that the sun won't go away
It doesn't mean there won't be tears and bruises
Once some folks have had their say
Maybe it's not even meant to last,
God knows he's made a mess along the way
But he can feel the light for the first time
In the longest time today

He'll try until he dies to get a handle on
The best way to explain
How it's possible in years of going nowhere
To have also lost his way
And that won't heal the bitten hands
Or wipe the disappointment off of every face
But he can feel the light for the first time
In the longest time today

Yeah, there'll never be a time he doesn't
Wish it all had gone some other way
But he can feel the light for the first time
In the longest time today
