Graduation
You graduated today
I guess you could say that I'm proud
But before you go off and take on the world
There are a few things I wanted to say
If I see you
At the subway station
15 or more years from now
Will the memories of me rush past you like the trains
Or will you have forgotten my name?
I guess I still feel like
I have something to prove
So I hope I get to see you again
Some day
You graduated today
I watched it through posts from your mom
But before you go off and start a new path
There are a few things I wanted to ask.
If I see you
At the grocery store
20 or more years from now
Will you stop and say Hey
Or just continue with your day
As if you don't even know who I am
If I could take it back
I don't know if I would
Because you taught me more than a professor ever could
If I see you
At the class reunion
30 or more years from now
Will you think of me as the one who got away
Or will you even remember that day
The day you kissed me on the dance floor
Held my hand like you wanted more
Heard me crying in the bathroom
And just stood outside the door
The day you took my picture on that disposable camera
Hung it on your wall
Saying this was forever
When you decided she was better
Oh I bet you'll forget her
But you'll see me again one day
And what will you have to say
We graduated today
And I guess I'm glad that you're gone
Because in this cap and cords and gown
I feel strong enough to move on
I guess you could say that I'm proud
But before you go off and take on the world
There are a few things I wanted to say
If I see you
At the subway station
15 or more years from now
Will the memories of me rush past you like the trains
Or will you have forgotten my name?
