Summer Lens

I can see you through a summer lens
Practicin' your violin
Extra-large Dead Kennedys T-shirt
Uncut grass and fair weather friends
One on one, and two on two
Sunburned knees, black and blue
And when we popped the lid on the storm drain
We just climbed on through
Lookin' for skeletons draped in gold
Secret riches yet untold
And all we found was leaves and mud
And somethin' you can't have or hold

I wish I coulda stayed a little longer
Memories fade as that old black ribbon unwinds
No one ever says "so long forever"
Even if it's gonna be the last time

Snow fallin' down on '96
Was jumpin off the roof into it
We traded in our bike chains
For a blue and white horizon
We built our fortress then
'Til the street lamps brought us in
Pretty soon it was a cold river
And the drain had robbed us again

I wish I coulda stayed a little longer
Memories fade as that old black ribbon unwinds
No one ever says "so long forever"
Even if it's gonna be the last time

Sweet sixteen in a seafood shack
Guess I was born a setting sun
I don't think about it much
I think about it some
And I wish I coulda stayed a little longer
