The Letter

I got a letter from someone like me
I blinked through the daylight and choked back my tea
Still stuck to my pillow, I read through her plea
Marked the decade before she wrote, what'll we be

I considered the question after some disbelief
I remembered her evening, her hunt for relief
I worried about what my answer would be
But I knew she was listening, so I said let me see

You'll be twisted sometimes, all tangled inside
And some mornings will feel like they're mocking your pride
But the city is pretty, and while you're asleep
There's love at your side, and a dog at your feet

So I studied my hands and the lines on my face
A lump in my throat while I tugged at my waist
All the space I've grown into, a matter of time
I thought none of this fits in a paper-wrapped rhyme

But I know what she's thinking, still see through her eyes
Although she was young, I know she was wise
She ended her note with a hint we'd be fine
I hope that she knows I won't leave her behind

You'll be twisted sometimes, all tangled inside
And some mornings will feel like they're mocking your pride
But the city is pretty, and while you're asleep
There's love at your side, and a dog at your feet

I got a letter from someone like me
Let this melody be your next letter from me
