Waxwings

Cedar waxwings were here this morning
'Bout half and hour and then moved on
Stripped the holly of the berries
Took what they needed and then were gone
Take a walk upon the ridgeline
Blue above and green below
Thread of water wanders through it
If you're not quiet you'd never know
Take me down to the river
'Neath the shoals and the stones
Lay me back in the water
Let the current carry me on home
All the books upon the shelf
They're all in Latin save this one
Worn red cover with gold letters
The prayers of a Benedictine monk
All these people are conformists
They live in walls you can't see
All will die but all won't live
'Cause it ain't living unless you're free
Take me down to the river
'Neath the shoals and the stones
Lay me back in the water
Let the current carry me on home
There's a beauty in just living
But few live life as an art
Too afraid to be different
Too afraid to stand apart
Take me down to the river
'Neath the shoals and the stones
Lay me back in the water
Let the current carry me on home
Let the current carry me on home
