THE LAST ADAM

When first I took my pen in hand
For thus to write now understanding
What it was I would proclaim
To all the world upon this plane
Of parchment I began to plow
With all my bones did cry aloud,
"I am undone, for I have seen..."

Your people laughed at me
When I told them there would come a "king:
And all the world would fall beneath the footstool of this feet
Until his enemies be brought to none,
Let every knee and every tongue confess
With all their heart and all their might
They might be saved

And thus I wrote beneath the burden in the valley of vision,
I saw a man among the flame
In place of love he took the wrath
He bore my peace upon his back
That he might make for me a path
To free me from my shame

At but a whisper of his name,
The dragon trembled in this chain,
I saw the dead free from the grave;

And thus the word became the flash
That Iliberty might swallow death
And every tear would thus be quenched,
He'd wash away every offense,
And by my mouth the lion roared,
It was no pen it was a sword,
"I shall return with your reward,
In vengeance I shall try the earth in flame"
