Paintbrush / The Optimist

An offer of a paintbrush, to whom its giver loved
Its giftly nature pardoned on account not of
An appreciation for who it came from but for what
The things it had inspired, oh her love was not divided

An offer of creation; an exchange it was
He paid for it with what innocence made him think was not
Even possible at the time, but his love was on the line

The making of an artist; the crushing of their soul
One would like to forget that they are interchangeable
Would it help you understand if you were cursed with heaven's plan?

The rejection of a paintbrush whereupon his heart broke
He realized it was too weirdly shaped for her to hold
Was it so foreign a concept?
Oh he painted what he wept:

Oh how I love you all the same
Help me to know you; it shouldn't take (it shouldn't take)

A curse to make your blessing
Or hurt to keep progressing
The thought is so depressing:
That life needs death to make it

All of my life
Surrounded by your light
You don't need to get this or accept this
For us to be alright

(Oh, how I love you)
(Surrounded by your light)

An offer of a girlfriend, so different from him she was
Her beauty left him speechless and he put down his brush
So he could place his arms around her and create with her love
With her love (with her love)

A compromise is easy when I'm filled with your joy
One day I'll gift this to you and you'll paint me some noise
I'll play the optimist this time...
