Foundations of Matter

Bonding informs structure
Which informs properties
There are simple rules to help
And those rules are these

Molecular substances are somewhat discrete
Informative formula fully complete
Giant structures could be endlessly bound
Unlimited numbers of atoms to be found!

Covalent metallic ionic bonding
Foundations of matter around us forming
When shared in pairs electrons are covalently tight
When electrons move by transfer there's no sharing in sight
Ions held together by forces electrostatic and strong
Bonding in compounds and molecules - it's been here all along

Molecules are covalent they're simple to do
Then ionic is giant too many ions to view
Metallic has a sea of electrons with cations too
And then giant covalent well they're not simple (it's true)

A giant structure has a high melting point
Atoms held by strong bonds they're strongly joint
Molecules on the other hand are easy to change
From one state to another the forces short-range
Need little energy to overcome
That's a simple outcome!

Covalent metallic ionic bonding
Foundations of matter around us forming
When shared in pairs electrons are covalently tight
When electrons move by transfer there's no sharing in sight
Ions held together by forces electrostatic and strong
Bonding in compounds and molecules - it's been here all along

Another class of substance suddenly appears
They're called monatomic been around here for years
So inert undiscovered quietly they persist
In the world around us they simply exist

Covalent metallic ionic bonding
Foundations of matter around us forming
When shared in pairs electrons are covalently tight
When electrons move by transfer there's no sharing in sight
Ions held together by forces electrostatic and strong
Bonding in compounds and molecules - it's been here all along
