Good Man In a Storm

Rushing down the path that we come to
No lifejackets, but we'll make do
Looking out to sea, I hold on to you
Take a deep breath and we dive in
Waves roll over our fragile skin
We swim out where deep water begins
We're holding hands on the way down
Strong swimmers, but we'll both drown
We call for help, but we're too far out
And it's too late to turn back around

I was made to be such a good man in a storm
I don't want to betray the oath I've sworn
Didn't know we had so much to learn
Just now seeing how ill-informed we are
Heading for the point of no return
No one starts out hoping they'll crash and burn

How long are we going to tread water?
You're not my dad I'm not your mother
Life catches up should we even bother?
The voice in my head says I can't go there
I'm in charge of everyone's welfare
This can't be all mine to repair
Everyone standing on the shore is waving
They can't see the fight we're facing
They can't feel the tempest that we're braving
And we can't talk about what we're saving

No one talks about struggle
"What will everyone say?"
No one wants people
Questioning why you choose to stay
Don't need our lives overlaid with gray
Don't need the details so you can pray
Don't want to give myself away
No one wants to become a public display

I suddenly find my strength and I start to swim
I'm just not ready to give in
Even though chances are feeling slim
Maybe if I get it right he'll come along
I won't have to point out all that's wrong
I just want to know he can hear my song

No one wants to
Be left alone out on the water
All I want is
To know that there's enough here to fight for
