Fireflies

You know that feeling
When you wake up
But you're not sure
If you're still dreaming

You try to collect your thoughts
Is this your bed, your house
Your room your reality
Or is this something else

Then you remember you
Don't believe in hell
So you get up and stare
Out the window

Headlights burn like fireflies
Hooked on Adderall or Ritalin
Straight
And focused

You need a little something
To numb the electrons
Pulsing through neurons
Rattling chains in your brain

Everyone knows Marijuana is a gateway
So you indulge in doctor prescribed opioids Instead
Glass of stale nightstand water
Go back to bed

Rest your head
In a coffin made of flannel

Some nights it don't work that way
And you can't sleep
And those fireflies
Are coming right through the window

The photons sparkle and crackle
Rainbows leech from the fracture
In the broken mirror
Growing out of the wall

That silver crack formed when
Your clenched fist crashed into it
It wasn't meant for the mirror
It wasn't meant for the glass

And the jagged gash in your hand
Is still pumping red
Stains on your white sheets
Like the Devils Rorschach test

Looks like your mother
Or maybe your father
Or those faces that look back at you
White eyes from the shadowy corners

God damn those fireflies
Red and blue ones screaming
In that space between
The hemispheres of malfunctioning meat

Imprisoned in white bone
You are alone here

Ahhhh, ah ah ah

The space in between
I'm lost
I'm not crazy
Am I crazy
I am alone here
Drifting dreamless in the void
A little Lost a little tired
Drifting through the emptiness
Of my own creation
