Two Feet From the Rain

Bone dry, lousy porch light
Withering away, down to brittle gray
Two feet from the rain
Someone tried, nothing grew
Something hides, decayed at the root
So it's soon to be replaced with something new

Cold winds, hard dirt to hold in
Is it springtime yet? Easy to forget
A lily left for dead
Someone moved out, another moved in
Without a doubt, no one's moved the place it's in
And if they do uproot, replacement will begin

Quietly mistaken for an ashtray, godforsaken
Every bloom left vacant, cemented to the pavement
Here, where the rain doesn't fall, not at all, of that I'm sure
A prayer for the roof
To spring a leak sometime this week and let it pour
I take a drag and sigh, the lily gets ignored

Dark eyes, amber burn light
Withering away, down to brittle gray
Two feet from the rain
Someone tried, nothing grew
Something hides, decayed at the root
Hoping soon to be replaced with something new
