Once Upon A Sign

I still remember his silhouette in the early AM
The day he and I first met
I still remember the coy roulette as our eyes place bets
Attest who might take the first steps
The silent tremors and nervous embers beneath my chest
Ablaze by our baited breath
Of all contenders his patient temper transcends the rest
Blessed once our hands caress

Then I saw my father smiling wide
A sign I would only see but once upon a time
Maybe it was all the manors and the car
Whatever he saw he could tell it from the start
Finally a man he can applaud
His integrity is no facade

I still remember on the drive
Never notice if we're losing time
Flying fast across a couple state lines
Searching for some peace a mind
Out the window I could just unwind
As he lay his hand across my thigh
Oh so, this is how it's gonna go
Oh no, this is no coincidence
I know, oh I believe so

When I saw my family smiling wide
A sign I would only see but once upon a time
Maybe it was how he stood out from the crowd
No one up till now got the chance to come around
Honesty is something to applaud
Oh his loyalty is no facade

We moved a little reckless
Perhaps a bit too careless
Dismissive to other's perspective
'Cause in the heat of that morning
All I could hear was their mourning
Someone they feared they were losing
To a devil in disguise
They were warned of their whole life
How could I dare expect their arms to open wide
But all it took was time
And a promise to be kinds
To put aside our difference and have faith in His grace

And I see the Lord their by our side
What can only be the sign
I should recognize form once upon a time
Those moments I recall
His guidance 'fore the fall
And to this day I'm still in awe
This boy who brought me home's a man of God
