Golden Thread

We wove our souls together with a golden thread
For a moment it was beautiful
We glittered in the wind

When winter came we were so breathless
Still shaking in summer linens
As icy stones grew between us
I lost sight of your eyes

And I'm looking for the crystals that we looked into together
Told us where we'd been and where we were to go
But the sky is full of ash and I no longer have the eyes to see the things I saw so clearly there before

We swam the length of the river
Forgetting the feel of land
Hands entwined we floated weightlessly
With the emptiest of minds

First bit of bank we touched we trembled
Having forgotten all but sea legs
We gathered sticks and made a fire
But in the morning it was gone

And I'm looking for the crystals that we looked into together
Told us where we'd been and where we were to go
But the sky is full of ash and I no longer have the eyes to see the things I saw so clearly there before

But as we climbed the mountain view
Lungs bucking in the altitude
I knew in heart of hearts I knew we were dead
But love is just a thing to hold
We take in hand when feeling bold
I'd rather lose than shiver cold in my bed

We wove our souls together with a golden thread
