The Last Time Again

I never would have noticed her if she hadn't called my name
Her voice cut through the heat like a tear
But she didn't look the same
I rocked back on my heels for a second and sorted out her face
Acting like I had forgotten she'd said I was too close to her space

I built a real big fence, to help with my defense
I tried to find a hobby or something that wasn't too intense
I stopped counting the days
Quit using words like 'phase'
Now I swear that I'm remembering for the last time again
The last time again

She walked through that fair like lava dripping off the moon
And I tried to overcompensate for everything she knew
All that I had dreaded I'd wanted standing in front of me
And I'd only been a heart attack away from a full recovery

I built a real big fence, to help with my defense
I saw someone else with her name on tv and I didn't even flinch
I stopped counting the days
Quit using words like 'phase'
Now I swear that I'm remembering for the last time again
The last time again

I'd been convinced she was fully forgotten
My memories laced with lies
But I'm not some make-believe positive thinker in a happiness disguise
So I turned up the heat for a minute
A chill had raced through the room
I guess a little of that space was empty
Because she said "I could need you soon"

I built a real big fence, to help with my defense
I tried to find a hobby or something that wasn't too intense
I stopped counting the days
Quit using words like 'phase'
Now I swear that this is happening for the last time again
The last time again
