With You Daddy

I asked my dad how did he quit smoking
He said, "Son one day I saw you tokin" on a
Half smoked cigarette, he left laying by his tools

He said I couldn't have been more than nine or ten
When I looked at him with a cat eating grin, and said
"Look at me daddy, I'm the Marlboro man, just like you."

I did my best to step in every footprint daddy made
I'd stretch my legs as far as they'd go
Chase after him and say

With you daddy, take me with you daddy
Everywhere you're going to, I just wanna be with you
Right with you daddy, don't leave me daddy
Don't you know that's right where I belong

Six weeks shy of twenty-one
Daddy called and said I got some bad news son
Doctor says I ain't got very long and
I ain't told your mama yet

I said, "Daddy I'll be on the next flight home"
That ain't the kind of news you ought to break alone
I didn't break down 'til I hung up the phone
Damn them cigarettes

He put his big old arms around me
the moment I stepped off the plane
He said, "Son you didn't have to come"
All that I could say

With you daddy, take me with you daddy
Everywhere you're going to, I just wanna be with you
Right with you daddy, don't leave me daddy
Don't you know that's right where I belong

Daddy wasn't conscious the last three days of his life
But I stayed there right beside his bed
And I cried like a baby, but I knew he'd be alright
When he smiled and whispered, "Oh my God"
Reached out his hand and said

With you daddy, take me with you daddy
Everywhere you're going to, I just wanna be with you
Right with you daddy, don't leave me daddy
Don't you know that's right where I belong
