Lest We Forget

It was Christmas Eve in Germany
1943
Inside a log cottage in the wood
Was mother and daughter on their knees
Bombshells and gunfire outside
They knew they couldn't leave
There came a loud rapping at the door
Three Australian soldiers rushed in
One badly wounded Fell to the floor
Without hesitation the mother tried
To patch the wound, as best she could
then said you can all stay here and hide

Lest we forget
Lest we forget
Lest we forget... this story yet

She said boys please eat
As they put they put their weapons down
Then came another rapping on the door
Three German soldiers this time, were found
Heil Hitler they yelled
And pointed their guns
To her as she raised her hands high
There are three guests inside,
she said, you're welcome too,
just as long as there are no shots fired
Its Christmas Eve, she reminded them
When Jesus was Born in Bethlehem
Then the wounded man in agony cried
One German, a doctor, flew to his side

Lest we forget
Lest we forget
Lest we forget... This story yet

After dinner the Christmas story was read aloud
The sounds of bombing suddenly died
Was there one star shining bright
They didn't see as they watched outside
The wounded soldier awoke
from his deep sleep
Across his face a smile did creep
The soldiers went their diff'rent ways
The patient stayed a few more days
A wonderful miracle happened that night
Bloodshed and enmity all took flight
The Germans gave the Australians a map
Showed them the safest way to go back

Lest we forget
Lest we forget
Lest we forget. this story yet

it was Christmas Eve in Germany
1943
