I Walked into the Blackness and Built a Fire

Little sliver in the cloudy sky
Glowing red like the devil's eye
Close & the world turns to black
Drifting off it seems to me
I only see you in my dreams
& I can't bear with this lack

But I would give chase if back roads were as they were before
& in any case I have naught to offer, naught in store

I passed a creek & heard your laugh
& all the trees were bent in half
I let out a raw-throated cry
It echoed scarce of enmity
Alas you still eluded me
Yet it's no water on my fire

So I will give chase, the back roads are clearer than before
But mist is in place & I can't see the paths anymore
Beyond our vision the flood will palliate the pines
With spires ruined its memory will pacify our pride
