Black Diamond

We set out to ski the black diamond
On bent poles and one broken ski
Halfway down the avalanche hit
A blizzard kicked up, and the Saint Bernard quit
Instead of a fireplace toasty and warm, we got the perfect storm
Lying there broken, lost in the woods
We made ourselves say God is good

And Love found us on that black diamond
Delivered a full body cast
Of painful redemption, sprinkled with grief
Knitting together the bones underneath
Brokenness we had kept in the dark mended by God's own heart
Swept to the margins and misunderstood
We heard ourselves say God is good

Life dishes out more questions than answers
Feels more like doubt than faith
Every time we couldn't take it, we couldn't take anymore
That third stubborn Thread in the cord
Held strong as the others gave way

We're polishing up our black diamond
Gifted to both you and me
Twenty years in we know it's the gem
That fractured us back to wholeness again
The snow that buried all of our dreams became a living stream
And someday we're gonna get out of these woods
And we will still say God is good
We'll know that we know that we know that we know
God is good
