Radial Symmetry

O the streets, pouring cars like veins
Into a city that's barely breathing
A cold wind, gasping for air
Building are wearing their wintercoats

We sit shoulder to shoulder
Strong and unassailable
Under the parapet
And over a town
Reminding us that nothing's for granted
That old decrepit bridge we're facing
An old church, derelict and falling

We shut our eyes and keep them closed

We don't want to see the day we'll turn old
And I know you know what I'm thinking
As I smile while you give me that funny look
The same one you had when we first met
That time when you tossed away my notebook
And said "I'm no poet, I'm more of an architect"

But you took care of my trifling poetry
For every word that didn't rhyme so nicely
You took their broken syllables
And made them perfect symmetry
