Character Blur

Sometimes I revel in how it used to be
Before we all became attached to our screens
Subject to uninvited commentary from the likes of those who barely know you're here

Now you invest in only what they can see
The shallow compliments lead to conceit
To show the world that you're extraordinary, cater to an overbearing jury of peers

Deny all your flaws, and ignore everything you are
Tell lies from afar in an attempt to cover up your flaws

Whatever happened to your self worth?
It's been replaced with a flattering number
Can't face the truth, cause you know it hurts
Your character blurs

I'll bet you wonder why you've lost all your friends
You're way too stubborn to ever make amends
And the corruption of your morals has become a state of normalcy that you defend

The life you painted with your digital pen
Is a facade you struggle to protect
So let the lies around you settle while you're sleeping with the devil in his lover's bed

Deny all your flaws, and ignore everything you are
Tell lies from afar in an attempt to cover up your flaws

Whatever happened to your self worth?
It's been replaced with a flattering number
Can't face the truth, cause you know it hurts
Your character blurs

You sing a song, they pretend to know the words
Your ego's overloaded from crooks with other motives
You've been strung along, and consumed by the public thirst
As your confidence eroded, your life became devoted to an unreal standard
