Song for Nora
Song For Nora
On her last day in Bantry
She strolled down on the beach
As the bells rang out over the town.
Ganets and gulls,
Steeples and spires
Aimed up at the feathered sky.
The summer had warned her,
With it's whispering leaves
That the life in her belly,
Soon could not be concealed .
And all the wives in the village,
Through vermilion lips,
Their tongues lashing and cutting,
Clipping snipp snipp snipp,
Above porcelain cups,
Between poisenous sips of tea.
Nora I said you're brave but naive
With all your " love until death us do part"
All these saints in your village
who'd rather believe
you're a fallen angel and not just another broken heart.
She'd just dimmed the nightlights
When O'Neill entered the bar
In glances she sipped from his eyes.
She measured his stature,
His smile and his charms
She measured the muscle in his arms.
He believed in damnation,
In the worm that never rests.
They all said prayers for their bishops,
For their crops and their health.
Cliches and platitudes,
Dripping from their lips,
Pious tongues,
Same old lashing,
Same old snipp snipp snipp.
Snivelling acts of contrition,
As they spread all their
Jealous lies.
Nora I said you just live in a dream,
With all your "love until death us do part"
And your God up in heaven,
whose watching out for you.
All you romantics with
All your broken hearts.
On her last day in Bantry
She been seen on the beach,
As the bells rang out over the town.
Ganets and gulls
Steeples and spires
Aimed up at the birdfilled sky
Though the summer had warned her
With it's whispering leaves
That O'Neill had betrayed her
With some barmaid who believed
All the lies that he'd told her,
How'd they raced through her brain,
All that cutting and lashing,
Clipping snipp,snipp,snipp,
As the angelus chimed,
Through the rain .
Nora believed in love and a world,
Where people were all good at heart.
When O'Neill paid the new girl,
He winked "just keep the change",
As he swaggered his way from the bar.
On her last day in Bantry
She strolled down on the beach
As the bells rang out over the town.
Ganets and gulls,
Steeples and spires
Aimed up at the feathered sky.
The summer had warned her,
With it's whispering leaves
