Salt

I found a shell she left behind
In the funeral parlor of her mind
Through the snow we forged ahead
Her city burned behind
She turned around, froze on the spot
My little medicated wife of Lot
There and then I lost the girl to something I can't name
Salt in the tears across her face
Salt in the ocean
Every drop she shed was such a waste
Too soon to say what could remain
Her eyes are empty
But the memory is still ingrained
He never looked at me like her
I caught him praying where the armies were
Not a word for me at all
His eyes turned to the sky
I met a girl in need of Thee
'Death is the end' said she
With a tear she gave to me a void I could not fill
To belong or to exile
To defend or to defile
All that I could do was guess and pray I got it right
Salt in the tears across her face
Salt in the ocean
Every drop she shed was such a waste
Too soon to say what could remain
Her eyes are empty
But the memory is still ingrained
With a bandage on your tumor
And Saturday's brave face
"Victory or death" by any name are not the same
Until I feed this hunger
For the joy we knew before
I will bear a loss to get across once more
