Kondol Wings

Under kondol wings
Morning light warms
Pyramid steps
Intoxicating blossom
Effervescent sprouting corporeal
Cupped in my hand
Nests of ant activity
Wrap around leaves
And citrus tongue
Bleeding trunk red sap
Made for dyeing fabric
Different shades of rouge
Swimming in temple pools
Diving devas leaping
From ancient memory—yesterday—
I make my way
Leaving dusty roots behind
—spiritual climb—
Airavata—elephant of the clouds—
Carry me like great Indra
—lord of Svargaloka—
Lift me closer to heaven
Beyond this mound of brick and laterite
Where air is thick and light
Echoes across impenetrable jungle
As i look out from this mountain
This quiet temple
This sheltered fountain
Among dried lotus flowers
Where Buddha waits out his days
Lokeśvara gaze upon us
And guide us through
The divine procession—together—
To nirvana
