The Toil of My Work (An Apology)

When I work alone what I find I can keep
Sometimes late at night when I can't get to sleep
I started out young using tools that were cheap
With only a shovel I can dig very deep

I did not forget you, I carry a picture of you wherever I go
I did not forget you, I would show it to everyone I know
But I don't know a soul

The years went by quick now my mind is getting old
I had gold in my hands, but I lost my hold
I heard what was said I didn't heed what I was told
Time is a cave wall that's wicked and cold

I did not forget you, I carry a picture of you wherever I go
I did not forget you, I would show it to everyone I know
But I don't know a soul

I've never had much luck I've wasted many days
The path that I took doesn't lead one to fame
When I was a young man I was straight but I've strayed
I had bigger plans these aren't the plans that I made

I did not forget you, I carry a picture of you wherever I go
I did not forget you, I would show it to everyone I know
But I don't know a soul
