Like Our Ancestors, Psalm 44
We have heard with our ears, O God
Our ancestors have told us
The deeds you performed in their days of old
With your own hand you drove out the nations
But you planted us
Afflicted the people living there
But you set us free
For not by their own sword did they win the land
Nor did their own arm give them victory
But your right hand, and your arm
And the light of your countenance
For you delighted in them
You're my King and you are my God
Commanded victories for Jacob
Through you and your name we push down our foes
For not in my bow, nor in my sword I trust
Cannot save me
But you have saved us from our foes
Confused those who hate us
In God we have boasted constantly
And we will thank your name forever
Yet you have rejected and disgraced us
And have not gone out with our armies
You have made us turn back from the foe and
Our enemies take spoil for themselves
All day long my disgrace is before me
Shame has overwhelmed my very face
At the words of the taunters and revilers
At the sight of the enemy
You've made us like sheep for the slaughter
And have scattered us among the nations
You have sold your people for a trifle
Demanding no high price for them
Even through this we have not forgotten you
Or been false to your own covenant
Our heart has not turned back nor our steps left
Yet you've broken us and covered us with dark
You have made us the taunt of our neighbours
Derision and scorn of those around us
You have made us a byword in the nations
A laughing stock among the people
If we had forgotten the name of god
Or spread out our hands to a strange god
Would not god discover this, for he knows
For he knows all the secrets to the heart
Because of you we are being killed all day
Slaughtered like the sheep
Rouse yourself, Why do you sleep
O Lord, do not cast us off
Why do you hide your face
Why do you forget
Our affliction
And oppression
For we sink down to the dust
Our bodies cling to the ground
Rise up, come to our help redeem
For the sake of your
Steadfast love
Our ancestors have told us
The deeds you performed in their days of old
With your own hand you drove out the nations
But you planted us
Afflicted the people living there
But you set us free
For not by their own sword did they win the land
