Paper Coffin

as the thread starts to unwind
tattered and frayed beneath the weight of time
swept away in its current

tied down by this human skin
mortality's foundation is failure

we dreamt of paper
we dreamt of stone
though unbound we slept, encumbered we woke
we dreamt of flesh
we dreamt of bone
though the rain was our cradle, we'll all drown alone

though the light burned out
in the dark we're blinded all the same

and if the flood should fill our cups
we will swallow what we deserve
and if the waves should break our bones
we will embrace what we're worth

given life behind these walls
only to walk comatose

we dreamt of paper
we dreamt of stone
though unbound we slept, encumbered we woke
we dreamt of flesh
we dreamt of bone
though the rain was our cradle, we'll all drown alone

though the stars burned out
our convictions shattered all the same

the paper split the stone
and drained the marrow from these bones

the flesh that drank the rain
crumbled under its fate
