The Night an Angel Died

Sitting in the shadows
Her hands are bound and tied
Shackled and imprisoned
Condemned but never tried
The bleakest of midwinter nights
The like of never known
The cold chills through this chamber
And the frost bites to the bone
Accused of spells and witchcraft
She healed a dying child
She gave a magic potion
From the essence of the wild
A cure of leaf and bramble
Gathered from the land
Now they sentence her to burn
For what they cannot understand

Once an ancient prophecy
Was written in the sky
That a phoenix from the flames
Would spread its wings and fly
And then the non-believers
Would witness with their eyes
That foretold becomes reality
On the night an angel dies

They pushed her through the narrow streets
Beyond the city gates
And dragged her to the summit
And tied her to the stake
A towering mass of timber
Oil to fuel the fire
They light the spark
And watch the flames reach higher, ever higher

Standing, waiting they watch the fire burn
Her final cries of pain one last time return
Remorseful signs of guilt sweeping through the crowd
As deathly silence falls upon this hallowed ground

Tonight witness your destiny
Once written in the sky
Watch the phoenix rise the flames
Spread its wings and fly
And as it breaths upon you
Feel it burn and blind your eyes
And tell the world what happens
On the night an angel dies

And as it breaths upon you
Feel it burn and blind your eyes
And tell the world what happens
On the night an angel dies
