sea level
There are no lyrics for this song
And actually that's why I thought
I would take the chance
To write a little something directly to
You
Dear listener
It's actually not a song
Sea level
At least not in the way that I understand song
For me
Song has to have lyrics
Song without lyrics
Just doesn't exist
This is just a piece
A piece of music
It is a pretty simple piece
With a simple idea
I wanted to make something
That got as loud as it could
As loud as I was able to make it
With my limited knowledge of
How that could be possible technically
So this loop of drums and chords
Were on two separate tracks
And I used a few different things
To see how they could be
Made to get louder
One starts off winning
And then the other catches up
And so the proportion
Of who is louder
Changes over the course of the track
Over all of this
The general level of the music is
Much much louder as it progresses
And as it gets there
You almost don't notice
But it's suddenly much louder
You might want to turn down your headphones
Turn down your speakers
Don't do that
To do so would defeat
The purpose of the piece
Then again
You can do what you like
I called it sea level
Because as this sound level
Increases and raises
The digital limitations of the recording
Are breached
The sound warps
And distorts
It begins to have the
Feeling of something powerful
Something out of control
Or at least containing new
Unpredictable qualities
I hope that sounds familiar &
I hope the metaphor is not lost
And actually that's why I thought
I would take the chance
To write a little something directly to
You
